The Prayer
The rosary is a circular string of beads divided
into five decades of ten small beads; each decade is separated from the next by a larger
bead. For each small bead, pray a “Hail Mary,” and for each large bead,
pray the “Our Father.” Each decade represents a mystery or event in the
life of Jesus. Th ere are four sets of “Mysteries of the Rosary,” and these
are prayed on different days as follows:
The Joyful Mysteries are prayed on Mondays and Saturdays
The Sorrowful Mysteries are prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays
The Glorious Mysteries are prayed on Wednesdays and Sundays
The
Luminous Mysteries are prayed on Thursdays
Before starting
to pray each decade, announce the corresponding Mystery on the large bead. Th en, as
you pray the following ten “Hail Marys”, meditate on the corresponding
Mystery. (Keep reading for a full list of Mysteries.) In addition to the circular string, a Crucifix is joined to one of the five larger beads by one large bead, which is followed by three smaller beads. These are prayed before the circular string as follows: The “Sign of
the Cross” to open; the “Apostle’s Creed” is said on the Crucifix; the “Our Father” is said on the large bead; the “Hail Mary” is said on each of the three small beads. There are no Mysteries associated with these prayers,
which are the introductory prayers before the decades.
After the introductory prayers and after each decade, say a “Glory Be
to the Father.” In June 13, 1917, in Fatima, Mary asked that an additional prayer
be added after each decade of the rosary (not the introductory prayers). The “Fatima
Prayer” is a prayer of forgiveness to Jesus and an intercession for the souls
of the departed said after the “Glory Be to the Father.” At the end of
the fifth decade’s “Fatima Prayer,” say the “Hail Holy Queen,”
and repeat the sign of the cross to conclude the rosary.
The Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Prayer Before the Rosary
After the sign of the cross, you may open your rosary prayer with whatever inspires your heart, including your intentions, but remember to include
Mary’s intentions for peace for the world and the conversion of all people.
The Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Th y name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against
us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
The Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace! Th e Lord is with thee; blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother
of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory Be to the Father
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Fatima Prayer
O My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires
of hell, take all souls to Heaven, and help especially those most in need of Your mercy.
The
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in
God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth; and in Jesus Christ His only
Son, Our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell;
the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He
shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy
Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection
of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Hail Holy Queen
Hail! Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To
you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning
and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes
of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your
womb, Jesus. O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises
of Christ.

While they

of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.”
[Matthew 26:26]1
1 The Luminous Mysteries were added by Pope John Paul II on 2002, but no “fruits
of the mystery” or “meditations” were defined. I use: God’s gift of baptism as a grace for the fi rst myster; Mary’s role as Advocate for us before God for the second; Following God’s will for the third; Belief in Mary’s apparitions for the fourth; Belief in the grace of the Eucharist to bring us closer to Paradise, to eternal life, for the fifth.
